Frequently Asked Questions

What Should I Expect Before Class?

Once you enroll, Cox's Harley-Davidson® will reach out with details about your course, including:

  • What to bring.
  • Course requirements.
  • Where and when to meet.

About the eCourse

North Carolina utilizes the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) curriculum, which includes the MSF Basic eCourse. This online course is vital to your preparation and replaces some in-person classroom learning.

  • Duration: Approximately 5 hours.
  • Deadline: Must be completed before the first day of class.
  • No Skipping: Even experienced riders must complete the course without skipping sections.
  • Proof of Completion: Print your certificate and bring it on the first day.

💡 Coach Tip: Set aside enough time to complete the eCourse so you're fully prepared!

What Should I Bring to Class?

✔️ DrDriver'sicense and LeLearner'sermit
✔️ Proof of eCourse Completion
✔️ Any Class Materials provided beforehand

What Should I Wear?

While gloves and a helmet are the only motorcycle-specific essentials, we recommend checking all gear at the dealership before class starts.

Required Gear List

  • Long-sleeve shirt or Jacket
  • Long Pants (heavy denim or riding pants preferred)
  • Over-the-Ankle Boots (sturdy with a low heel, not canvas)
  • Eye Protection (visor, sunglasses, or goggles)
  • Full-finger gloves (motorcycle-specific recommended)
  • DOT-Certified Helmet

Shopping for a Helmet

A helmet is the most critical investment in motorcycle gear. Here, buying your own is best:

  • Perfect Fit: It is customized for comfort and safety.
  • Better Focus: You can concentrate on riding, not adjusting.
  • Expert Fitting: Dealership staff will help ensure the best fit.

Pro Tip: Wear the helmet for 15 minutes in-store to confirm long-term comfort. Once purchased, helmets are non-returnable.
🏍️ Coach Insight: Full-face helmets offer the most protection, followed by modular and open-face styles. Half helmets offer the least protection but are still better than none.

What Happens in the Classroom Before Hitting the Range?

Here to expect during a typical weekend course:

First Class Meeting (3 Hours)

  • Dealership Tour: Get familiar with the environment and meet your coaches and peers.
  • Paperwork: Complete essential forms and learn about punctuality and gear expectations.
  • Course Review: Go over the eCourse material to solidify key concepts.
  • Activities: Learn about motorcycle controls and essential gear.
  • Range Preparation: Discuss range location, rules, and what to expect on range days.

💡 Coach Tip: Unsure about the range location? Visit it in advance to avoid morning stress.

What Happens on the Range?

Day 1: Getting Comfortable

  • Motorcycle Basics: Learn how to start, move, and shut off the bike.
  • Core Skills: Practice clutching, shifting, turning, and stopping.
  • Building Confidence: Each 40-minute exercise builds on the previous one.
  • Breaks: After every two exercises, enjoy rest time and use your ROADBOOK for reflections.
  • Classroom Debrief: Post-range session at the dealership for behavior and self-assessment discussions.

💡 Coach Tip: Riding can be exhausting—plan for a good night's sleep before Day 2.

Day 2: Advanced Skills & Evaluation

  • New Techniques: Learn cornering, swerving, and maximum braking.
  • More Range Time: Similar break structure with ROADBOOK reflections.
  • Final Evaluations: You scored on five exercises based on the skills learned.

🧘‍♂️ Coach Tip: Stay calm during evaluations. Mistakes happen, but don't let them derail your focus. Watch others and learn from their paths and techniques.

  • Feedback: Coaches will review your performance. If you don't pass, don't stress—retake options are often available.

What Happens After Your Time on the Range?

  • Final Classroom Meeting: Wrap up paperwork and cover any state-specific requirements.
  • Celebration: Welcome to the family of Cox's Harley-Davidson® riders!
  • Completion Document: This is not a license but may exempt you from specific state exams.

Next Step: Take your completion document to the DMV to finalize your motorcycle endorsement.
